Laura's Loom

Laura has been making beautiful scarves and throws from top-quality, fully traceable British wool since 2008. Her business proudly supports the craft of hand-weaving and reflects Britain’s tremendous textile heritage, helping to keep it relevant for future generations. Laura draws enduring inspiration for her designs and colourways from the fells around her home in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, particularly the Howgills.

Laura still works alongside the same farmers who first supplied her with their fleece in 2008 – the collaboration was born out of a desire to create beautiful products from this by-product of sheep farming, which they all felt was going to waste. Wool products also contribute to a more sustainable way of life: as a fibre it is natural, sustainable, and renewable; it doesn’t leave behind microplastics when it decays; and it doesn’t pollute the planet.

Laura does all initial design and sampling work by hand on the loom in her Yorkshire Dales studio. The fleece is then collected from a dozen farms in Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, sorted by Laura in her backyard and transported to Bradford for scouring. The yarn is then spun in West Yorkshire, dyed and woven in Langholm, and finally sent to cloth finishing mills in Galashiels and Huddersfield, thus creating beautiful, sustainable products with wholly British provenance.

[Several of Laura’s beautiful scarves are available exclusively here at the Grasmere Gather, and can be identified by their GG swing tag.]
