Lake District Tweed

Lake District Tweed produce sustainably hefted cloth with unique local provenance and heritage, which they use to create beautiful tweed throws and cushions. Lake District Tweed was born out of Maria and John’s efforts to diversify their traditional Cumbrian farm, Nibthwaite Farm in Coniston, making their 600-year family farming business more resilient.

Lake District Tweed products are inspired by the history of Cumbria, the beauty of its landscapes, and the hardiness of its farmers. It was founded with the intention of supporting local industry: farmers are paid above market price for their fleece, and then given a profit share from sales of products made from their wool. All processing, washing, combing, spinning, and weaving required to make each finished tweed product takes place in the North West of England, ensuring these traditional skills are kept alive and supporting local craftspeople.

Throws and cushions are made in valley-specific tweeds, one for each of the Lake District’s iconic Thirteen Valleys. Each of the thirteen cloths has unique design elements inspired by its valley, expressing the distinct history and geography of each through the choice of colour and pattern.

[Here at the Grasmere Gather we’re proud to be the only physical and online stockist of Maria’s Grasmere valley cloth, alongside being the only retail space to stock several other beautiful colourways.]
