Founded in 2009, Herdwick Limited buys Herdwick fleece (a byproduct from sheep shearing) exclusively from four Lake District National Trust farms, turning it into a unique tweed which is used on their range of bags, caps and cushions.
Their Cumbrian wool is sourced entirely from Hilltop Farm (Near Sawrey), Yew Tree Farm and Tilberthwaite Farm (both Coniston) and Townhead farm (Grasmere). The farmers hand source and sort the fleeces by shade, allowing the tweed to be woven without the need for any dye. The fleece is entirely processed in Yorkshire using specialist producers to achieve a high quality pure Herdwick worsted tweed. It is then hand-cut and hand-sewn to produce high quality products with direct local provenance.
Herdwick’s products are handcrafted by local specialists at each stage of creation – washing, carding, spinning, weaving, and finishing. This commitment to local provenance ensures the sustainable survival of these traditionally skilled careers in the northern counties of England.
Herdwick is available exclusively at the Grasmere Gather.
